We never disclose actual details about our real guests, but the following are typical of some of those who arrive on our doorstep:

• Tracy had been assaulted regularly from an early age; Social Services and probation staff knew her well. A friend in St Albans let her sleep on her floor, but then that friend's boyfriend turned her out.

• Kevin has had problems with drink and crime since his marriage broke down. He misses his children, needs time to adjust and a lot of help to get back on his feet.

• Mark is a refugee. His employer has just gone bankrupt and has no family to turn to.
